Nesting boxes and tubes    Surveying started May 2009    Dormouse Survey routine

First Full Year of Monitoring
~
2009 has been our first full year of monitoring the Dormouse activity at Howardian LNR. During the season (May-November) boxes and tubes were surveyed once a month. Records show that Dormice are present and thriving on the reserve with at least three females producing litters the largest being of five youngsters. The photograph below shows the typical browner coat colour of juvenile Dormice.

Taking data
~
The survey was conducted between May and November, seven surveys in all. Thirty boxes and eighteen tubes were placed on the reserve, checked once a month, and contents recorded. Early in the season Blue and Great Tits had nested in some boxes, later some were found with Woodmice in residence and in October we found a Pygmy Shrew. Dormice were found in eight distinct locations on the reserve.
